Born at Richmond, NY June 15th to Benoni and Oracy (Clark) Greene

1853

Graduates from Rensselaer on July 28th

1853

Appointed Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Practical Astronomy at RPI

1855

Made head of the Mathematics Department

1859

Marries Sara Parsons of Utica, Feb. 10th.

1861

Sarah dies March 3rd.

1864

Elected professor of mathematics and astronomy at Lehigh University, but declines the appointment.

1866

Marries Elvira Dickerman of Troy, July 19th.

1868

Elected a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

1895

Resigns his post at Rensselaer

1900

Dies August 6th in Troy.

Scope and Content Note

The Dascom Greene Papers contain student lecture notebooks, and miscellaneous letters received while Greene was an RPI professor. The lectures (1852-1853)cover a variety of civil engineering topics, including strength of materials, surveying, theory of machines, constructions, etc. The miscellaneous letters discuss the U.S. Coast Survey's need for Troy latitude observations (1871-1874), and the chronograph which Greene ordered in 1882.
