Walter White Evans kept a daily journal for all of his adult life. Early journals include day to day events related to his occupation as a civil engineer and document his projects on the Erie Canal, Copiapo Railroad in Chile, the Arica-Tacna Railroad in Peru, Southern Railroad in Chile, the harbor defense of New York City, and his business affairs with the U.S. Petroleum Co. and the Spuyten Duyvil Rolling Mill. After 1873, the journal entries become more focused on the daily routine of family life and travel. Evans and his family toured Europe for a year from 1878 to 1879.
