Contact Interlibrary Loan

The Rensselaer Libraries attempt to obtain materials without cost to researchers whenever practical either by seeking gratis use of materials from other libraries or by subsidizing most of these costs for Rensselaer faculty, staff and students.

The Libraries also provide a special subsidy program, called Research Express, for Rensselaer faculty, research staff and graduate students enabling them individually to order copies of journal articles from the Ingenta Company that are not available directly from Rensselaer resources. Undergraduates needing materials from Ingenta must route requests to the Libraries' interlibrary loan service.

How much will it cost?

Although most book loans between libraries as well as photocopies of journal articles supplied within the Capital District can be provided without charge, the costs of materials obtained outside of the Capital District occasionally may exceed library subsidies. Researchers can specify the amount they are willing to pay for a document by entering a dollar value in the "Max Cost" field of a request at the time of submission. Recommended amounts are:

  • $10.00 per book or journal request
  • $14.50 per US thesis
  • $45.00 per non-US thesis
  • $30.00 per technical report, technical standard

Researchers may indicate they only want a document on a gratis basis by entering "0" in the "Max Cost" field.

How to pay for items?

Researchers need to create "account information" within the Libraries' ILLiad system in order to indicate how they will pay for a possible charge by using the EDIT/CREATE ACCOUNTS option located at the bottom of ILLiad's Main Menu screen.

Researchers who prefer to pay for charges by cash or check at the time of pick up must also create an account in ILLiad for this purpose by entering the word, "Cash," in place of an account number. Researchers authorized to use research or departmental funds should enter these codes as their ILLiad account numbers. Graduate and undergraduate students may specify to have charges added to their tuition accounts by entering the word, "Bursar, in place of an account number.

What's not subsidized?

Document subsidies are not provided to employees of companies located in either Rensselaer's Incubator Center or Rensselaer Technology Park who are not otherwise affiliated with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Library subsidies do not cover "Rush" handling or off-campus delivery costs. Researchers may be charged for supply costs of unclaimed materials.
