All available Masters and Doctoral (PhD) theses of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are indexed in the Libraries' Catalog by personal author, title, and title keywords.

If you are unsure about personal authorship, try searching for the author, "Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute" and then either limiting the search results by Material Type "THESIS" or selecting one of the departmental entries for a shorter list of entries. (Note: Because department names change over time, you may have to browse several lists to see all the theses associated with a "department.")

Rensselaer PhD theses are also indexed in the Dissertation Abstracts (DA) database available at many academic and research libraries. DA entries usually provide an abstract.

New Rensselaer theses are usually available for use within the library 6 - 8 months following date of graduation. PhD theses appear in Dissertation Abstracts usually within 12 - 15 months of graduation.

Availability of theses

With the exception of circulating copies of PhD theses completed since 1976, Rensselaer theses are restricted to "Building Use Only." Theses dating from 1920 to the present must be requested from the Circulation Desk. Theses predating 1920 are available in microfilm, and original print or manuscript copies may be used by contacting the Institute Archives.

Rensselaer faculty, staff and students may access electronic copies of PhD theses dating from 1996 from the ProQuest Current Research website. The first 24 pages are available for immediate review and the complete dissertation may be loaded without cost as a PDF file.

How to order copies of theses

The Rensselaer Libraries' Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service will provide cost estimates for making a single photocopy of any Rensselaer Masters or PhD thesis. A few theses containing large scale drawings and/or brittle paper cannot be photocopied. Supplemental parts of theses, e.g. video and audio excerpts, also will not be duplicated.

The Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service may be contacted by:

    • email: ill-support@rpi.edu
    • fax: 518-276-8559
    • phone: 518-276-8330
    • ARIEL: 128.113.68.100 or
    • the OCLC Interlibrary Loan network.
Costs include a $15.00 handling fee plus a $ .20 per page photocopying fee. A typical masters thesis is about 125 pages; a typical PhD thesis is about 275 pages. (Air Mail delivery is extra and costs about $ 1.00 per ounce.) Allow 2 - 4 weeks for delivery. Advance payment by individuals is required; libraries will be billed directly or charged via OCLC's IFM system.

PhD theses dating from 1950 to the present also may be ordered from University Microfilm International's ( UMI ) Dissertation Abstracts Service.
